In the United States, 46 percent of all new HIV/AIDS cases occur in the South. Pfizer responded to this alarming trend by partnering with community-based organizations in the region to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Pfizer Foundation and Pfizer committed a total of 6 million dollars over 3 years, beginning in 2004, to support a network of more than 55 innovative HIV/AIDS prevention program across 9 Southern states. By providing training for health workers, educators and volunteers, these programs have strengthened the capacity of community-based organizations to reach and serve their communities.
After three years of intensive grant and capacity building support, the majority of Southern HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiative grantees have demonstrated stronger programs and organizational capacity, including significant improvements in program evaluation and technology skills, as well as stronger networks with local and regional AIDS service organizations. In addition, the social impact of the Initiative has been significant:
- More than 1,000 individuals were trained as a peer educator or peer mentor
- 3,000 individuals were provided with testing and/or counseling
- More than 11,000 referrals were made to testing, counseling and healthcare services
- More than 50,000 community members have been reached with prevention materials
